Submission

General Information

Every journal homepage comprises a 'Guidelines for Authors' section with detailed and specific editorial and textual requirements which you need to consider when writing a paper.

A growing number of our journals offers online submission: the respective links and instructions can also be found on the individual journal homepage.

Technical Instructions for the Preparation of Manuscripts

Software

The preferred word-processing package is MS-Word. Other commonly used PC text programs as well as ASCII formats are accepted.

Disk Submission

Please store only data pertinent to the manuscript you are submitting. It is advisable to include your fonts (Macintosh users need to include both screen and printer fonts). Do not save your paper with illustrations integrated! It is of crucial importance that you remember to store all illustration data separately. Use 3.5 inch disk for text only submissions and CD-ROM for submissions that include illustrations.

Revisions, Copy Editing

Please update your data when you revise subsequent to the reviewer's or editor's decision and mark revisions clearly as such. All manuscripts accepted for publication by Karger are subject to copy editing. Changes introduced by the copy editor and / or questions will be marked in the manuscript/printout so please be sure to check the galleys against the manuscript. The copy edited manuscript and your disk will be returned to you along with the proofs

Do's and Don'ts

Apart from the rules on style and arrangement as set out in the individual journal's 'Guidelines for Authors' please note the following basic rules:
  • Do not use any special page layout. If you would like to see what your manuscript looks like with embedded tables and illustrations, remember that we need text and illustrations as separate files!
  • Enter your text continuously flush left. Do not use hard returns ('enter') within a paragraph, only at its end.
  • Do not justify.
  • Do not use footer and header functions.
  • Do not split words at the end of a line.
  • Do not use indentations anywhere in your manuscript, including the references. Mark the beginning of a paragraph by inserting an extra blank line. Use a hard return ('enter') to mark the end of a paragraph.
  • You may use the automatic page numbering function.
  • Headings should be arranged left. Do not center headings, space them or set them in uppercase.
  • Use the same style for headings of the same ranking throughout the text.
  • Use boldface and italics as well as sub- and superscript where appropriate.
  • Use block letters (UPPERCASE) only for abbreviation. Do not s p a c e individual words for emphasis.
  • Insert one - and only one - space after each punctuation mark, e.g. at the end of a sentence and with reference numbers, i.e. [22, 27, 35].
  • Distinguish hyphen and dash as follows:

  • hyphen
    dash

    minus sign
    high-resolution
    1890–1990
the incident – as responses showed – was perceived...
    at a temperature of -75°

  • Use your word-processing program to insert Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.

  • Tables

  • Tables are part of the text. Place them at the end of the text file.
  • A table consists of heading, head and body and, if necessary, footnotes. Use a line to separate these parts.
  • Do not use spaces in tables, use the tabulator.
  • Edit operation data (e.g. 15.1 ± 7.23) into one line in the same column.
  • Do not use boldface or screens in tables.

  • Illustrations

If your data does not correspond with the following guidelines it may be more economical to use the original/print for traditional reproduction. Always include originals/prints when submitting digital images in as many copies as indicated in the 'Guidelines to Authors'. Illustration data must be stored as separate files. Do not integrate your figures in your text.

    Legends
The legends to your figures are part of the text and should be listed at the end of your text file.

    Line Drawings
  • Use a common program to generate drawings.
  • When preparing your line drawing ensure that the size of the drawing corresponds to its importance and complexity and that the size and weight of all elements are balanced.
  • Keep in mind that it may have to be scaled down: Do not use 'hairlines', minute type or very fine details. Screens should be used sparingly. Fine background screens are not recommended as they do not scale down well.
  • Please check all text elements very carefully to exclude typing errors and inconsistencies.
  • We prefer line drawings in a standard format (TIF, EPS, WMF etc.). If this is not possible export them in their original format and include as much information as possible on the program you used.
  • Save them as separate files, not embedded in the text.

  • Black and White Half-Tone Images, Color Illustrations
  • For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, Photoshop is recommended. Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
  • Export black and white half-tones and color illustrations as TIF or EPS format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
  • Save them as separate files, not embedded in the text.

  • Scans

  • Scanned line drawings must be digitalized with a resolution of at least 800, better 1000 dpi (dots per inch) after scaling.
  • Scanned half-tone images should be digitalized with a final resolution of 300 dpi, a 12 bit grayscale accuracy and a density range of 2.8. Screen values must lie between 5% and 95%.
  • Scanned color illustrations must be digitalized in RGB mode with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, a 32 bit accuracy and a density range of 2.8.
  • Summary:
